Vocabulary of Enlightenment, such as "grok"

Posted on May 3rd, 2009 by Michael : Computerless Michael
Wow this got to be far longer than I realized before I pasted it in.  I initially started with the word grok.  Maybe later I'll try to whittle it down, but for now, I swiped some teabags over at the casino on my way home and I'm going to have a cup of tea.

Awakening, stabilizing awakening, and on into enlightenment - - these indicate (an advanced) human sentience uniquely differently clear, and shifting into these three, reaching towards enlightenment, can garner a lot of attention from a person.
Shifting, waking up, becoming enlightened, can temporarily play out as such a mystery, creating so much cognitive dissonance, that some spiritual circles offer the belief the only way to wake up is suffer suffer and suffer until you feel like dying and finally giving up!  Some seeker-questions lead teachers into tangented and "illogical" answers such as;
"I am so confused, Master!"
"Good!"
Yet difficult awakening is only one of a million ways a person can wake up.  The moment of awakening is a moment entirely of Grace - - no matter what preceeds it.
Seeking to clear this up, the thing I find more useful to share is not about "practices" or beliefs or ideas about waking up, but instead shining a light on awakening itself, as that is always the same for everyone.  First stage usually the Oneness experience and second, the self falling away, the disappearance of the questioner.
To discuss this, a whole new vocabulary and  series of thought-paths have been used and you may find them helpful.  A thought path might be exampled by the Zen picture/descriptions of The Oxherder, which can point out the path without attendant beliefs.  They are truly an example of Pointing At The Moon where the teachers says, "Don't look at my finger, look at what it is pointing to!"  We try to paint a picture, artistically feeling the listener, not trying to duplicate a photograph.  Using words at the edge of common understanding is necessary when trying to describe what is outside usual experience.  Some words are needed which don't already exist, or may I say, definitions which exist solely in the realm of trying to XdescribeX point at, provide the feel of, awakening.
I've begun to collect a few words I've seen more than once and I hope you enjoy my sharing:
grok, the verb, from Stanger In A Strange Land.  You'll probably need to read the book to understand "grok" and then to love the book to grok grok.  To Grok, is to fully "get" the entire substance, sufficient to feel what it feels, appreciate something to the point of identifying with something.  This is more than understanding.  If anything is left out, for example its density, then it is not fully grokked.  For instance, it is unlikely you have ever grokked a stone, as we usually reserve empathy for things we have heirchially judged as higher - - such as Animated, Living, Animal, Mammal, Primate, Human, Good Person, Spiritual Person.  Many seeker-sidetracks are caused by trying to identify with what we THINK an enlightened person is or has: spirituality.  Yet grokking a stone is far more likely to wake you up.  Or grokking some dogshit.  Once you begin to grok, you may begin to appreciate appreciating as well as grokking, and discover that most of the universe was outside what you previously blindly thought was unappreciatable.  You discover that to understand a stone technically, is totally different than what being a stone is experientially.  The more you grok, the closer you become to Oneness.  The less you grok, the further away.  Enlightenment is full grok.  However, remember that there is a suffering path as well, so judging things as not worthy of grokking may wake you up even faster, as you may just be one of those persons who's can't tolerate hell and you stop efforting to wake up.  Better to grok early and often than to risk the hard way, though.  The hard way works for only a few.
efforting is to be actively expending effort, which is usual in any seeker.  However, awakening is effortless when it happens. Being aware of "efforting" is helpful to notice and be aware of investment of effort.  Also, if you're convinced you're not awake now, what must you experience?  Certainly not being awake!  In the absence of efforting, anything is likely to happen.  In the absence of anything happening, the higher the likelihood of experiencing HereNow.
HereNow.  Be Here Now.  If you could Be Here Now, you would, and this all would just be for fun.  Well, it is anyway, really, this is just for fun.  Also, you could Be Here Now.  Really.  If you don't believe that, then probably you won't be here now.  Though why someone who is here now would want to believe they are somewhere else longing to be here now, is a mystery, it is a common affliction.  Maya.  Illusion.  When you get past the creepy feeling of things like knowing your love partner is an animated skeleton fleshed out by the human costume, you're well on your way to being comfortable enough to wake up.
courage,  often ignored, courage is needed to step past your limitations, give up the comfort of illustion and saying Yes to truth, even if it feels like being out over the edge of the cliff.  Admitting you are in mid-air will not make you start dropping, you already are.  You can feel it.  If you can't, then I'm probably wrong and you don't need to be courageous after all.  Courage is not fear-less, courage is standing up right in the face of fear, when need be.
asleep  Most effort is not to wake up, but is spent to stay asleep from an unaccepted world.  It's all about avoiding.  This should help demonstrate why efforting doesn't work: you are efforting against the vast amounts of effort you are already expending to stay asleep!  You are battling yourself.  And most of us have enough efforting to stay asleep to last a lifetime, and so, unlikely to wake up in this lifetime.  When exhaustion causes all efforting to wake up to cease, a person sometimes stops efforting to stay asleep as well, so they wake up.  Of course.  Easiest thing in the world.  Note that the efforting version of waking up in despair won't happen if you still keep running againstness type effort in the background.  You have to effort so so hard that somehow you invest ALL effort to wake up, and only then does Failure and Despair prompt you to give up ALL effort, including your unconscious effort to stay asleep.  As you can see, this is a bumpy road and not much fun at all.  Still, some people choose this.  If it works, don't fixt it.  Still, you deserve to know about that.
(an) awakened(s), "s/he awakened from sleep" is a common verb, but can also be an adjective or noun: "awakened person" or if with the right people, "an awakened."
enlighteneds, same thing.  A group of enlightened people, such as the core at an Adya event, "Wow, Look at that groups of enlighteneds in the same room!"  Even today, this is still lumpy usage though.
ever-loving-Now, nice way of indicating something more experientially real than mere, "now."  I just added this one for fun of it.
overthink, Needs no explanation, I hope.  Like much On The Path, over-thinking is something to not bother with when you notice it absorbing your attention.
attention particles, This is usually a surprise to everyone, but the early Avatar Wizards Courses dis-covered that attention is an energy, is as real as gravity, creates and intensifies realities, and your attention particles can be depleted.  The more attention particles you flow at something, the more real it becomes.  This should be no more difficult to believe than healing energy, touch healing, or even feeling someone behind you looking at you.  We all decide just how attentive we want to be to our powers, how deep we want to be aware.  Having present awareness on the attention particles you are sending out is nuanced and subtle.  And lovely.  You needn't believe in the "particle" part, this is just as valid on attention no matter how you define it.
'paying' attention is also good to notice because rarely do we realize that attention on something we don't want to attend is costly.  Stressful.  It feels like we're being charged, that we're "paying."  Paying Attention.  Whereas attending on something we love or find juicy is easy and doesn't feel like a price at all.  Effortless.
Juicy.  For indicating a something, belief, anything which feels like attending vibrant lively life.  Something you like, enjoy or love.  Something you are Yes for.
Yes.  The opposite of contraction.  Yes is an arrow towards highest potential.
Contraction.  Ultimately, enlightenment will say that without any contraction whatsoever the universe might unsolidify into one big ole light-being.  That contraction manifests the world we experience.  Many sitting Buddha statues have one of his fingers sorta just reaching down and touching the earth.  Keeping just a little bit of worldliness going to keep him from de-manifesting from form and never coming back down.  The finger just touches, a tiny bit of contraction.  At least, "Oh.  Body needs food." (and "if I don't come out of this I'll starve" -- which is a contraction)  Contractions can be detected by their No flavoring.  "I need food" is also a No to starvation, dontcha see.
Sleepwalking.  Normal delusional life, Maya, identifying with the illusional worldly world, is like sleepwalking and indicates why the word "awaken" is used for the first shift.  It feels like when you just woke up.  But to wake up, there must have been sleep.  Wakened people often say their awakening was also their revelation of how they have been asleep, living a sleepwalking life, akin to watching TV all the time but having forgot it's all a movie.
illusion, Maya.  This is believing that the world you are manifesting has nothing to do with you, you're only in it.  This is easy to believe if you don't notice, or refuse to attend, that your attention creates your experience, that your beliefs create your reality.  Creating a universe to live in and then thinking you didn't create it is an illusion.  If someone else does something inappropriate, you're insane to think they could have mad you angry.  "Justified" or not, any anger - - YOU created it.  As long as you accept Maya, choose to defend illusion, the more victim you will experience, no matter what anyone else does or does not do.  So long as you experience the right/wrong game, you cannot be awake.  FIRST, it is what it is.  If you accept it, then you are present.  If you do not accept it, you are reacting TO what-is, and part and parcel of the whole darned shooting match.  Present, you may wake up, while reacting, well, you're busy aren't you?
